Set in Ireland in 1936, it’s a summer of changes for the five Mundy sisters as they gather together. Uncle Jack returns from a long mission in Abyssinia, their first radio brings music into their ancestral home, and a young man with a lust for adventure returns for a visit.
Dancing at Lughnasa is a story told by youngest sister’s son, Michael, whose memories as a 7-year old transports the audience back in time to meet these strong women and their family.
Dancing at Lughnasa is often compared to the Tennessee Williams favorite, The Glass Menagerie, and is widely regarded as Brian Friel’s masterpiece. It won the 1992 Tony Award for Best Play, the Outer Critics Circle Award for Best Broadway Play and the New York Drama Critics Circle Award for Best Play. Time magazine chose it as one of the 10 best plays of the year. We invite you to join us on this magical journey of memory, illusion and dancing.
